I confess, I do not finish every book I start. So ReadIt.me was causing some issues with books sitting in my "Started" queue with nowhere else to go.

I've made a lot of changes in the past month to the structure of the data so that books can now be marked as "To Read" or "Abandoned." The user profile pages (check out mine if you like) are in a new three-column format that will give you a quick overview of how many books you're currently juggling, how many you want to read, and how many you have finished or abandoned.

I've also changed the way actions are marked from the book search page. The new UI will work on the iPhone!

I tested the functionality in IE7, Firefox 3.5, Opera 10, and Google Chrome. If you notice any broken functionality, please let me know!

Updates released today:

• You can now mark a book as "Finished" from your user profile page (instead of having to search for it again).
• Miscellaneous other bug fixes (showing avatars for users with email addresses, including a slug in the URL for books, etc.)

One of the features I'd like to add soon is the ability to "abandon" books without marking them as "finished." As a library reader, I do this on a consistent basis and it would be nice to keep up with all of the books that I tried but just didn't like.

A couple of people have requested the ability to leave a comment when they add a book. You can now leave a short comment (150 character maximum). This will be shared on the front page and on your ReadIt.me profile page.

At the moment, these comments are not related to what you post to your Facebook profile. What I'm working towards, however, is one unified comment field that would allow you to post your thoughts to Facebook or other social networks (primarily Twitter) from one place.This would require that you authorize ReadIt.me to post updates on your behalf. That does require some level of trust. You do trust me, right?

The next thing I'll be working on is the the ability to "Finish" a book that you've started directly from your profile. At the moment you have to search for the book again to mark it as "Finished." My wife informs me that is tiresome (hooray for instantaneous feedback from spouses!).

Also, the blog now has an RSS feed. So if you're interested in the newest changes, you can easily subscribe to it. Speaking of RSS feeds, every user page (like mine) has it's own RSS feed so you can keep up with the user's list of recent reads.

While the site is up and functional, there's obviously still a lot of work to be done. Like all developers, I often hold back pushing projects live because I feel as if they're never finished. I made this one publicly available despite some of it shortcomings in the hope that it's already of some use. Here are some of the things I'm currently working on:

• A mobile interface (particularly for the iPhone)
• The ability to show your Facebook friends who are using ReadIt.me (although technically you can do that on the Facebook profile page
• The ability to add a short comment when you finish a book.
• The ability to track books you want to read, or have bought (this is a lower-priority item).
• A list of popular books for the month or week (based on how many users read the book). Obviously this requires a reasonable number of users first.
